16 Apr WEIGHTLIFTERS ARRIVE HOME TO A ROUSING WELCOME
The weightlifters from the big village of Hanuabada arrived home to a rousing welcome at the Jackson’s International airport to excited family, friends and supporters upon their arrival from the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Amongst those celebrating, was Trukai Industries Limited, a proud sponsor of PNG Weightlifting Federation for more than 20 years.
Trukai Industries Ltd General Manager Sales and Marketing, Mr Andrew Daubney congratulated the three medallists for their outstanding performance in the Commonwealth Games.
He also acknowledged and congratulated all the six weightlifters for their sacrifice and commitment put into training whilst being away from home and their families for almost a year.
Repeating his feats at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, Steven Kari snatched Gold in the Men’s 94kg Division and broke the Commonwealth Games Clean and Jerk record in the process. Dika Toua and Morea Baru were also magnificent in capturing Silver in the Women’s 53kg and Men’s 62kg Divisions respectively.
Prior to the Games, Trukai Industries Ltd embarked on a campaign called “Lifting PNG To Gold” to rally public support behind the weightlifters to secure medals for PNG.
The campaign covered all mainstream media including online media that ran for a month leading into the games in April.
“While the dominance of the PNG Weightlifting Federation in previous competitions cannot be denied, their results in an international field second only to the Olympics and World Championships has again rocketed PNG weightlifting on a world stage, as did the 2014 Glasgow Games,” said Mr Daubney.
“These athletes are in elite training, away from their families and mostly overseas, for many months at a time. It takes incredible dedication and resilience to do what they do, and to be rewarded with Gold and Silver Medals is an amazing outcome.
“Like the theme of our campaign, today they will stand here as our very own PNG superheroes.”
