Trukaiís Agribusiness Section is located in the Lae head office and takes responsibility for the farming and agricultural pursuits of Trukai Industries in Papua New Guinea.
Trukai Agribusiness operates a commercial cattle production unit at Erap and a rice and peanut research and development production and training area at Gabmazung (formerly at Cleanwater). The section employs nearly 50 fulltime and casual staff within its operation and provides additional employment on a casual or contract basis.
The overarching aim of all Trukai Agribusiness is to promote the advancement of agricultural production in Papua New Guinea. Most importantly, the projects seek to ensure that agricultural production systems are both profitable and sustainable. The rice, peanut and cattle production areas are used as models to exhibit what is possible with agriculture in Papua New Guinea.
Examples of Trukai Agribusinesses projects include:
Evaluating and growing rice varieties for commercial sale at the Gabmazung site.
Multiplying peanut varieties for seed which are then offered to the National and Provincial Departments of Agriculture and Livestock for distribution.
Artificial insemination programs to improve cattle genetics for smallholder cattle producers. This has resulted in an elite nucleus cattle herd being established at Erap, providing a robust breeding ground for the Papua New Guinea beef market.
Trukai Industries continues to evolve, and through the establishment of the Trukai Agribusiness Section the company has made significant social, economic and agricultural achievements. Increased training for community members is leading towards increased farming production by farmers and employment opportunities for rural youth. In turn, this is assisting to address many social problems which are encountered in rural areas.
