Major achievements with beef industry projects include:
Commencement of a collaborative project with NARI on introducing the Epliblema moth for the biological control of Noogoora Burr (A major introduced pasture weed).
300 ha of improved pasture established at Trukai Farms. Trial of various legumes and grass species ongoing. A total five-year plan was also commissioned for the total development of the pastures at Erap. This includes the development of a “green lot” fattening enterprise based on use of the tree crop Luceana.
Monitoring of introduced Calligrapha beetle as a bio-control for sida retusa weed infestations continues.
Ongoing testing of cattle herd in conjunction with NAQIA as early warning for disease/pest outbreaks (Sentinal Herd Monitoring).
Sponsorship of two students to tertiary education. Includes work experience on university breaks. University and school tours of Cattle operations throughout the year.
75 cows impregnated with imported semen to improve local cattle genetics.
Trial of herbicides and methods to control Acacia Farnesiana (prickly acacia) weed infestation in lower Markham Valley.
Overseas technical training attended by Agribusiness Manager to learn appropriate technology for cattle production and to investigate alternative markets.
Establishment of alternative marketing channels for local beef producers.
Herd replacement bulls distributed to smallholders on a ”swap in your old bull” basis.
Over 2000 cattle purchased from smallholder producers and cattle herds on customary land.
Provision of secretarial support for the Cattleman’s Association of PNG.
Assistance provided to smallholders to transport their cattle and to cash cheques locally eliminating the need to travel to Lae to cash cheques.
Support for the Livestock Development Corporation in upgrading the existing public abattoir facility in Lae.
Development of a working party to investigate future abattoir facilities for the lower Markham.
Provision of technical support and management consultancy information to other PNG cattle operations.
