Trukai Industries is committed to assisting Papua New Guinea to increase domestic food production. A major part of the activities of Trukai is devoted to developing local rice production. In particular Trukai seeks to increase the number of smallholder rice producers and accordingly efforts focus on this industry sector.

In addition, Trukai seeks to work with all stakeholders in the promotion of rice production in PNG. These stakeholders include Government Departments (DAL both National and provincial and NARI), Educational Institutions (Unitech and the Universities of Vudal and Goroka as well as high schools) and Aid Agencies (JICA, ROC, OISCA and the ADB). Trukai operates and coordinates the Secretariat for the PNG Technical Advisory Committee on Rice and Grain (TAC), funding the meetings of members of the committee (3 TAC meetings held this year). A major development this year has been the publication of the “Book of Rice in PNG” which was funded by Trukai Industries. This book is a definitive history of rice production in PNG and sets the scene for what is achievable. Any individual who aspires to understand the industry or is involved in policy formulation must read this book.

THE BOOK OF RICE IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA WAS FUNDED BY TRUKAI AND WAS DISRIBUTED TO MAJOR INDUSTRY STAKEHOLDERS. THE BOOK IS AVAILABLE FOR SALE FROM TRUKAI AT K25.00

Other major achievments with rice production include:

  • Continued rice and rice seed production from Rice Based Farming Systems (RBFS) project at Trukai Farms.
  • Importation, trial, assessment, multiplication and distribution of rice, peanut and maize seeds for government agencies and smallholders.
  • Unitec Department of Agriculture Rice trial first phase completed at Unitec Farm and second phase at Cleanwater in progress.
  • Annual RBFS/Trukai Farms Field Day (15th March 2002). Rice Based Model Farm and Information Stall at Morobe Provincial Agricultural Show (18th to 20th October 2002). Extension stall at NARI Field Day (June 2002)
  • Rice Receival Depot and Huller operations continue to strengthen the market for local paddy rice. Adverts for purchasing paddy rice continue to be run in the local press.
  • Support for Farmset P/L to continue importation and service of mini rice mills. More than 20 rice mills have now been imported by Farmset and sold to provinces in PNG. Spare parts for mills distributed to those in need as well as training in use of the mills.
  • Rice Relay quarterly publication is mailed to over 120 interested parties. Rice information booklets distributed at shows and field days.
  • Trukai’s Rice Agronomist has traveled to WNB, Madang Province and EHP to assess and assist rice production in these areas.
  • Assisted NARI Rice and Grain program with 32 varieties rice that formed part of seed bank maintained by Trukai.
  • Trukai Industries distributes rice seed from The Department of Agriculture in Lae to Trukai distribution centers throughout the country free of charge.
