In Papua New Guinea, rice has become a convenient nutritious dietary staple, and a food of choice. Rice competes successfully with more easily grown local foods, including sweet potato and other root crops, because it stores well, requires little water or fuel to cook, and provides a satisfying and tasty basis for a variety of family meals. Trukai Industries is by far the largest and most successful player in the PNG rice market. Trukai, two thirds owned by Ricegrowers and one third by the Melanesian Trustee Services, enjoys an excellent relationship with Government, and through sponsorship of sports, health and nutrition, is a highly regarded corporate citizen. Trukai Farms is one of the largest contributors to agricultural research in Papua New Guinea, and including the farm agronomists and the nationwide distribution and marketing network, Trukai employs a total of 300 men and women. In the local language, “Trukai” means “really good food” or as they might say in its place of origin, “top tucker”.

Trukai's interest in promoting good health for people of PNG goes beyond diet. Trukai is actively involved in community work through the Lae Chamber of Commerce and Industry, PNG Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In addition, we sponsor many sporting events in PNG.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA SPORTS FEDERATION

In keeping with its long tradition of support for sports and fitness in Papua New Guinea, Trukai has contributed large cash and kind donations to the PNG Sports Federation, to help pay for the participation of the PNG team at the South Pacific Games, the Commonwealth Games & the Olympic Games.

Trukai has directed sponsorship towards weight lifting, power lifting and body building, sports which it supports on a regular basis in PNG. These sporting bodies are accredited with winning more then 30 medals for PNG in international competitions. They have always done Papua New Guinea proud, and Trukai’s support over many years has been a contributing factor to the athletes’ success.

Champions such as Dika Toua, the first PNG woman to compete in the Olympic Games in Weightlifting, were sponsored by Trukai.

As well as the very large cash donation, Trukai has provided dress uniforms, and competition uniforms including tracksuits, training shirts and kit bags, to its selected sports.

Trukai is also a major sponsor of the other fund raising events organized by the PNG Sports Federation, for sport in PNG.

The PNG Sports Federation’s major fund raising event each year – the annual Trukai Fun Run, is also richly supported by Trukai, with more then 30,000 runners competing.

Sport is a nationally unifying factor in Papua New Guinea, and Trukai is proud to be a reliable friend to the Sports federation, and to the fit men and women who work so hard at weight lifting and body building.

“We are also pleased to see them succeed at home and in international competition, training on a healthy, high energy diet that includes Trukai rice,” Marketing Manager Brett Schofield said.

Trukai Industries is the major sponsor of the PNG Sports Federation and is actively involved in the development of internationally competitive athletes through the federation
